A Lesson in Compassion

Several months ago, my friend Hollie began sending out e-mails.  A lot of them.  About orphans from  Ukraine that they would be doing camps for over there.  And even bringing some back here for a hosting program.  She wanted support; financial and time and effort.  So I deleted her e-mails.  Half the time I didn't even read them first.  (yes, yes, I am hanging my head in shame)

And I woke up one morning and felt as though God had hit me with a 2x4.  He spoke to me about my lack of compassion.  He showed me how my kids just weren't "getting it" when we talked about missions and giving ... all because their mom was obviously not "getting it."

So I shot Hollie a message and offered to drop off pizzas for lunch for her and the kids.  Simple, enough to assuage my conscience, and I wouldn't have to stay and feel compelled to do more.  Then Holy Spirit began convicting me again.

(Me) What, this isn't enough?
(HS) To whom much is given, much is required.
(Me) But I'm not called to Ukraine.  I'm not called to orphans.  I have other things I'm called to.  Right here, in my home, as a matter of fact.  This is Hollie's deal.
(HS) Jesus came to go about His Father's business.  I guess you're just going about your own?  Pure and undefiled religion ... orphans ... love as you have been loved ...

I wrestled with God for a good long while.  I ended up taking my kids to the library and researching Ukraine.  Then we went to the store and bought food to make a nice, hearty chili and some sweet cornbread to feed everyone for dinner.  We brought it out there and so began the extreme tweaking of my worldview and heart.  You can read a little more about that HERE; after only 2 days with those kids I was seeing life differently.  And check out Hollie's blog HERE to read about the awesome things that happened while the orphans from Ukraine were with us.

I'll be sharing more, so stay tuned -- this is one crazy, awesome journey!
